Every week we have our team meeting at ReSoMe and each team member is assigned a “speciality” or two. They specialize in 2-3 social networks or platforms and monitor the blogs and news around those specialities for relevant social media links, important updates, trends and awesome examples of businesses using those social platforms. These are some of the highlights from around the web this week:
Instagram has a new champion in Justin Timberlake. The Suit & Tie singer joined the service on Sunday and posted a slew black and white images about his Grammy experience that day. Since that time, he’s accumulated more than 120,000 followers, but someone should really tell him that there are other filters.
Since Instagram was bought by Facebook, the photo-sharing service has slowly been filling-in its web presence. This week, it added the Instagram web feed (much like the one you’ve had on your phone since forever), meaning you can finally check out your friends’ most recent photos of cats, fancy meals, and landscapes in your web browser. Look for the little home button in the upper-left side of your Instagram web profile for access.
The Facebook gift card began its roll-out this month, integrating virtual gift balances with real-world purchases. Get this: it’s a real card you carry around with you in your non-virtual wallet. So the next time your birthday rolls around, you can suggest that folks express their congratulations in the form of some real-world gifts at Jamba Juice or The Olive Garden. Try the stuffed mushrooms!
ReSoMe Research And Content Specialist Chelsea also recommends everyone try out the PageData tool for comparing similar brand pages. The tool allows you to see total number of fans, new fans and other engagement metrics from Facebook Pages. So snoop around!
If you saw The Social Network, you might think of Mark Zuckerberg as whiny introvert. But in fact, Zuck and his wife Priscilla Chan are among the most generous philanthropists of 2012, donating almost $500-million to a Silicon-Valley charity. Take that Aaron Sorkin!
ReSoMe is a fan of MySpace. Well, we’re actually fans of Justin Timberlake. But in any case, you won’t have to look at ads while listening to Suit & Tie (MySpace log-in required!) because the New MySpace will be ad-free while the service is in Beta. MySpace owners Specific Media cited too many ads as one reason why the site failed in the past. Instead, MySpace will aim to partner with advertisers to create more relevant ads, including the branded stories familiar to Facebook users once the site launches in full.
The Harlem Shake is the viral video of the week, so point a camera at yourself and wiggle around like these Norwegian soliders. The videos have resulted in great exposure for New York DJ Baauer, who supplies the soundtrack for these crazy dance moves.
Youtube tip alert! Bulk actions can help you add tags, change privacy settings, or delete many videos at one time. Check out the tip here and try it out yourself.
#BellLetsTalk is dominating Twitter in Canada today, after the telecom giant promised five cents for mental illness causes for every tweet or retweet using the hashtag. As of 11:45 am, the official count is at more than 330,000 tweets, meaning more than $16,500 will be donated to these causes.
