Why should you attend the Social Capital Conference in Ottawa May 31st – June 1st? Here are a few reasons why – and a chance to win your way in!
1. Learn about using social media more effectively.
OK, this is a bit of a cheat, OBVIOUSLY that is a reason you should attend the Social Capital Conference! Yes, Social Capital Conference has a line up of fantastic speakers covering topics that will formally review many aspects of social media, and that is great. But, the learning that comes from the Q&A, conversations, round tables and just being around passionate people sharing their knowledge and experience, gives you a much deeper understanding. You will walk away from Social Capital with so much more than if you simply watched those same speakers on a YouTube video, Podcast or read their blog post.
This is a fantastic opportunity to grow your online and IRL (in real life) network. Don’t wait until the event kicks off, start now and connect with people on social media. Look for people on Twitter (#SoCapOtt), Facebook and Google+ that are talking about going, connect with them and make plans to meet up if you see value in making the connection. Bring business cards, a big smile and a firm handshake to the event. Set a goal to learn about you key social media topics but also to meet key people – aim to put a face to the avatar you chat with regularly or to meet to person who write that blog you read, use it as avenue to introduce yourself to that prospect or a possible partner. Job hunting or hiring? Don’t keep it a secret and use the conference to grow that network with social savvy people! After the event don’t forget to send out those follow up emails, LinkedIn connections or set a date for coffee. Use the conference as a starting point, not just a destination for growing your network.
3. Get Inspired
Sometimes doing the same thing day in, day out can drain the energy out of even a career you love or get you stuck in an uncreative rut. Conferences have that magic effect to spread contagious enthusiasm and energy! I don’t know if it is the charisma of the speakers, the buzz of the crowd, the strangeness of breaking out of routine and changing venue or all of the above but it WORKS! It is next to impossible to come away from a multi-speaker event like Social Capital without new ideas, new energy, inspiration and a can do attitude!
4. Jump Start your Efforts
Don’t come empty handed – bring your laptop, tablet, smart phone and come ready to take action. There are a number of workshops, speakers and roundtables that will be hands-on, tutorial type presentations. There is a great business philosophy around “do it now” which helps business people get more done by skipping the planning time and just doing it now, so it is done. A lot of the stuff to be covered at Social Capital will be immediately implementable (is that a word??) with a Wi-Fi connection and a few clicks you can make the changes and practice what you are learning in real time! This means if you really hustle, you can leave Social Capital with not only new ideas but real progress.
5. Use it or lose it
I have often heard people say that they feel the Ottawa business and networking scene is dead, it’s quiet, there is no support for business, there are no fun conferences, everything is about government and nothing relates to me. Well, here you have it Ottawa, a helluvan opportunity to learn, connect, get energized and benefit in a huge way regardless of which business or industry you are in. (The organizers even managed to sneak some government stuff in there too so EVERYONE can benefit!) So here’s the deal, if you don’t attend I forbid you from ever complaining that nothing ever happens in Ottawa, because these types of events don’t just happen, they take time, effort, organizing and they need attendees to make all of it worth it and to let it keep happening.
No excuses, let’s go!
So, that all being said, we want to help one of our awesome readers get to Social Capital so they can take advantage of all of these benefits! We are giving away a full conference pass including both Friday and Saturday. To enter to win simply leave a comment on this post with a reason you want to attend the Social Capital Conference. We will accept comments until Monday the 27th at midnight and announce (and email – so make sure you include a valid email address!) the winner on Tuesday around noon. We will use random.org to generate a random number and the winner will be the person with the corresponding comment. Sweet and simple.
Good luck and see you at the Social Capital Conference!
