An Algonquin College public relations graduate once told me, “The college learning is great, however you still do a considerable amount of on the job learning.” After a week of work at ReSoMe I wish they had expanded on this statement. I was prepared for joining the PR workforce, however the uniqueness of this work experience when compared to others was refreshingly unexpected.
Public Relations Agency Experience; Week One
Over the past week I’ve found myself doing new and interesting angles of public relations life, taking product shots, doing short demonstration videos, and playing with toys. One of those toys was The Original PlasmaCar, as one of our clients is PlaSmart. It’s all a far cry from the world of writing press releases and communications plans I thought I was entering, and I couldn’t be happier. Sure I’m still writing content for social media, but it’s just one part of many pieces of work here at ReSoMe.
New Websites learned
Similarly, I considered myself a pretty social media savvy guy, and yet within the first week I’ve joined, created, and made profiles on a plethora of websites unknown until now. Gravatar, Disqus, and Feedly to name some examples. Feedly is my favourite, especially paired with the app for my phone. It’s the best way for grabbing news on the way to work, every PR professional and beyond should use it.
At the end of the first week it feels like I’ve learned as much as I did in a whole semester at Algonquin College. The school definitely prepared me for this on the job learning, but how different it is, continues to be an unexpected and pleasant experience. If this expansion of knowledge and excitement will continue, or will it fall flat is yet to be seen. Every agency is different and I wonder how others experience their first time at a new place. How long did it take until this excitement wore off for you?
